Ceramic Monolith Catalyst

Support Your Oxidizer

A monolithic catalyst support consists of many parallel channels separated by thin walls that are coated with the catalytic active substance, most commonly a precious metal like platinum. The channels may be round or polygonal (mainly square or hexagonal). The structure is reminiscent of a honeycomb.

The substrate is a refractory such as cordierite. It is coated with aluminum oxide (alumina) and heated (calcined) to reform its crystalline structure to obtain the maximum adsorptive surface area capacity.

This alumina coating is then impregnated by absorption of a liquid solution mixture, usually in a vacuum flow coating process, with the active catalyst ingredients. This achieves a uniform catalyst loading of precious metals for the desired catalytic reaction. The catalyst life is determined by thermal aging and or poisons and cannot be reactivated.
